Former German footballer Sebastian Hertner died last Sunday, December 21st, in a fatal accident while on vacation in Montenegro.

According to German media, the incident occurred at the Savin Kuk ski resort, located in the north of the country, when Hertner and his wife were on a chairlift. One of the chairs detached from the cable, causing the former footballer to fall from a height of approximately 70 meters.

His partner, who witnessed the accident, survived but was injured with a broken leg and was rescued by emergency services and taken to a hospital.

Hertner is remembered mainly as a defender who played for clubs in the German second division, including 1860 Munich, Erzgebirge Aue, and Darmstadt. He was also part of the German national youth teams for the Under-18 and Under-19 categories.

He was playing for ETSV Hamburg, where he was captain of the Oberliga team, the fifth tier of German football.

Authorities in Montenegro have announced that a thorough investigation will be conducted to clarify the technical causes of the accident and determine if there were any failures in the operation or maintenance of the system.
